Caran d'Ache Luminance Review and Test

Aktualisiert: 4. Jan. 2023

I want to test some of my many many many pencils I bought over the years to find the best. For that Test, I created a Test sheet, you can get this over on my Shop as a Digital Download. It's so much fun to fill them out.

My Blog, Hobbycreatery.com utilizes some affiliate links which may generate a small commission from clicks that result in a purchase. This does not effect my opinion on the Product. Money earned keeps my blog running and allows me to make more Reviews and Product-tests for you. Thank you for your support.

2022 was a hard time for me and I started Coloring in some Adult Coloring Books. Living and Growing up in Switzerland, Caran d'Ache was always used in our Family. So when I found out about these Luminance, I could not resist buying them. I bought this wooden Case with 76 Pencils and I love them since.

If you just start with Adult Coloring buying great Pencils is really important. You can buy a pack of cheap but crappy pencils and then hate coloring. So why not spend a few dollars more to upgrade your pencil?

Pricing - How much do they cost

Now given that the Caran d'Ache Luminance are the leader in amazing Pencils, they have their Price as well. A 20 Pencil Case is around 66 Dollars. Yes, it is really expensive, but hear me out. It is not just a 1-time use and finish. And every time I'm starting a new Coloring Page I am always thinking, hm, which Pencil should I use and I mostly go to the Luminance. It's a safe option to get amazing Pictures out of it.

On Amazon, you can have different Pencils for different prices.

The smallest is the 20 Pencil Case https://amzn.to/3VhSAYE -

Then you have your 40 Pencil Case https://amzn.to/3hLJfe1

And the one that I have is the 76 Pencil Case https://amzn.to/3HYVluX

What is in the Case?

I can definitely understand when you can't or won't spend that amount of money on Pencils. But, in case you are interested, I would like to show you, what you will get with the 20 Pencil Case. I grabbed them out of my Stack.

The Testing begins

I want to show you, what you can do with them and what results you will get. So I grabbed 3 Pencils, that will be included most likely in any Pencil Case I will test. And that was blue, yellow and red. I also used black and white for one of the gradients later in the post.

Ok, let's start with Test Number 1:

The Mixing

Here is how I tested them for mixing. I put down the Colors in this Grid. Now here is, how you can Mix the Colors to get a lot more out of a small Pencil Case.

Step 2 is to put down a thin layer of every column's Color.

It may look a bit weird at the moment but trust the process.

The next step is to color in a thin layer of the Color in the Lines.

You are now starting to see some colors but the last step is to put down a 3rd layer of the Top Colors in the Column to get the final colors.

And as you can see, with only the 3 Basic Colors Blue, Yellow, and Red you can create 6 more Colors. Now think about how many you can create by buying the 20 Pencils Sets, or the 40, or even the big one. But, let's look at another Test.

The Layering

When Coloring, putting down layers of color is essential. So I put down up to 10 Layers of 1 Color on my Testing Sheet. And I had absolute no problem doing so.

I'm interested if cheaper Pencils will be as easy to layer as this one. The Color on the 10th Layer is absolutely vibrant.

Blending

For this Blending technique, I used the Blue Pencil and White and Black. I haven't drawn many Gradient, but I was so proud of how it turned out.

Blending with 3 Colors

For my last Test, I tried to blend all 3 Colors together. Based on the Color Wheel Theory, this should create an Orange Gradient and a Purple one. What do you guys think, did I achieve it?

I love how the yellow to orange to red turned out, but I don't like the purple Layer before the blue. It is too dark. But, I feel this was my own fault and not the pencils.

Conclusion

I know, that the Pencils are Expensive, but I did not wanna miss them in my Stash. I absolute love them and I actually bought more of them. As told in the beginning, I bought the 76 Pencil Case, but there are 100 Luminance Pencils in the Line, so I bought the rest of the 23 as well.

I will link the Cases here once more and I would love for you to check them out.
